Durable carbon removal

We build systems that turn biomass into permanent carbon storage.

Carbon & Volts is a technology provider and systems integrator for durable biochar production. We design, build and operate thermochemical plants that convert agricultural and forestry residues into stable carbon, renewable power and heat.

Years in gasification

One team, from feedstock study to commissioned plant.

Biochar projects fail on engineering, not on ambition. Feedstock varies, moisture moves, ash content bites, and a system specified for one residue rarely runs on another. We build around the feedstock in front of us and stay with the plant through commissioning and operation.

Technology Supply

Blue Flame downdraft gasification systems, configurable for char production or clean gas output. Dry gas cleaning throughout, so no wastewater treatment is required on site.

Systems Integration

Feedstock preparation and handling, conversion, power generation, heat recovery and biochar collection specified and delivered as one plant, not a set of parts.

Engineering, procurement and construction

Design, engineering, procurement, installation and commissioning under a single point of responsibility.

Operations and support

Operations and maintenance, performance monitoring and technical support once the plant is running.

Why Biochar

Carbon removal that stays removed

The climate market has moved. Buyers, regulators and financiers are no longer asking only how much clean energy a project generates. They are asking how much carbon it removes, how long that carbon stays out of the atmosphere, and how that can be measured and verified.

Biochar sits at the front of that shift. Gasifying biomass residue converts unstable organic carbon, which would otherwise decay back to the atmosphere within a season or two, into a stable mineral-like solid that resists decomposition for centuries. It is one of the few carbon dioxide removal pathways available at industrial scale today, with established measurement methodologies and a functioning credit market behind it.

Our systems are designed for that outcome. Char mode operation and consistent process temperature produce biochar with the carbon stability that durable CDR requires, alongside renewable power and recoverable heat from the same feedstock.

Centuries-scale carbon permanence

Power and heat from the same feedstock

Zero process wastewater

Twenty plants. Six countries. Feedstocks nobody else had gasified.

Our engineering team has been designing, installing and commissioning biomass gasification systems since 2011, across Southeast Asia, South Asia, East Asia and Europe. Several of those plants were the first of their kind.

Nanbu, Japan —
Forestry residue

A tri-generation plant producing 617 kWe of renewable power for the local grid and recovered heat for feedstock drying and community use. Commissioned June 2021.

Chaiyaphum, Thailand — Napier grass

2.3 MWe from purpose-grown energy crop, the first Napier grass gasification plant built in the world.

Bukit Selar, Malaysia — Bamboo and Palm Kernel Shell

The first industrial-scale biochar plant in Malaysia, capable of producing up to 40 tons/month of high quality, durable biochar.

Blue Flame gasification

Blue Flame is a downdraft fixed-bed gasification platform developed and refined across two decades of field installations. Its dry gas cleaning system removes the wastewater treatment burden that constrains conventional biomass gasification, and its operating modes let a single plant be configured for the output the project needs.

Gasifier can operate in two modes

Char mode

Optimised for biochar yield and carbon stability. For carbon removal projects where durable CDR is the primary product and energy is the co-product.

Ultra clean gas mode

Optimised for fuel gas quality and power output. For projects where renewable energy or fossil fuel displacement leads, with biochar as a co-product.
